Sadly, Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos has private profit as her main priority not the need for good public schools that are free at the point of delivery. Her promotion of vouchers and private education means that those of us seeking a just education have our work cut out for us. We will have to work with teachers, families and elected official as never before to protect what is left of public education.
DeVos, has already made history by being the first cabinet member with so little public and congressional support that the Vice President, Mike Pence, had to break the 50/50 log jam in the senate to approve her appointment. The combination of her total lack of experience with public education in any way shape or form was but one of the reasons her support was so low. The other was that she’s spent decades helping her wealthy family become wealthier by supporting charter schools.
It’s no surprise that a billionaire nominee, has no experience with uplifting public schools. But what’s more unsettling is the fact that she didn’t have any knowledge of Pell Grants, I.D.E.A. or the process of applying for Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Millions of students rely on the application/process to help them afford college.
We have no choice but to make up for DeVos’ ignorance and selfish priorities. There are ways we can work against the dismantling of public education and strengthen it instead.
Mothering Justice has always been an advocate for quality education. We believe no child should be left behind. It shouldn’t matter if a child is enrolled in public school, educational equality should be maintained across the board. Our partners and allies work to fight for working families. We whole-heartedly believe Ms. DeVos doesn’t endorse this ideology. We will never cease our efforts in making sure all children have access to the tools that’ll ensure a bright future.
